“No Longer Naked and Afraid”

“Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.”Genesis 3:7
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine.”Isaiah 43:1
“I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness…”Isaiah 61:10

There’s a reality show called “Naked and Afraid.” Strangely, that phrase came to mind—not while watching TV—but while sitting in church, listening to the choir singing "Thank You” by Walter Hawkins. Regarding the reality show, I'm not a fan, and certainly dismissed any image or thought of the show's content. But in that moment, it hit me: I thank God I am not naked and afraid. Because there is a God who sees me, knows me, and cares deeply for me.

In Genesis 3, when Adam and Eve sinned, their first response was fear and shame. The Word says their eyes were opened, and they knew they were naked—so they covered themselves and hid from God. That instinct—to hide and self-protect—is still very real today. We mask our insecurities, cover our pasts, and withdraw in shame.

But the Good News?

God came looking for them—and He still comes looking for us.

Through Jesus Christ, we do not have to live in spiritual nakedness or emotional fear. Isaiah 61:10 tells us He has clothed us with garments of salvation and a robe of righteousness. He replaces our shame with covering, our fear with love, and our weakness with His strength.

The phrase “Naked and Afraid” is common, but anyone who’s ever felt exposed—whether emotionally, spiritually, or situationally—knows the deep-rooted sense of vulnerability it evokes. From Adam and Eve’s fig‑leaf moment to our modern fears and insecurities, we often try to hide, cover up, or fend for ourselves. But thanks be to God: we’re no longer naked and afraid.

My song of reflection today is “Thank You” by Walter Hawkins, a heartfelt declaration:

“Thank You, Lord, for all You’ve done for me—For Your love, for Your power, Your protection every hour.”

This song isn’t just about praising God generally—it’s a reminder of specific acts of love and provision. These are the moments when we realize we weren't abandoned when we felt exposed or anxious. He was working, He was protecting, He was covering.

“Thank You Lord for all You’ve done for me. I wanna thank You for Your love; for Your power; for protection every hour.”

I've allowed the gratitude of this song sink into my heart today. May it remind you that you’re not left naked or unprotected—you’re covered in His grace, surrounded by His faithfulness, and shielded by His power.

That said.....

  • In what recent situations have you felt vulnerable or unprotected?

  • Where have you experienced God’s provision, power, or love—perhaps in small moments you almost overlooked?

  • How can naming His grace and saying “Thank You” bring you from a place of fear into one of confidence?

Heavenly Father, Thank You—for not leaving me naked or afraid. Thank You for seeing me in vulnerability and clothing me with Your presence. Thank You for love, power, protection, and provision in every hour. I choose to say “thank You” today, not just with my lips, but with my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
