“I AM: The God Who Is”

Heavenly Father, You have revealed Yourself to us in the burning bush and in the simple yet profound declaration, “I AM WHO I AM.” Open my heart to grasp the fullness of Your presence, Your unchanging faithfulness, and Your power to meet me in every season of life. Help me to rest in Your name and to walk confidently under Your banner today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Exodus 3:13–15 (NIV):

13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.”

Reflection

When Moses stood before the burning bush, he faced doubt—both his own and that of the people he was called to deliver. His first question to God was, “What is Your name?” In response, God proclaimed “I AM WHO I AM.” This self-designation (Hebrew Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh) carries three inseparable truths:

  1. Self-Existence: God is uncreated, not dependent on anything outside Himself. He simply is.

  2. Immutability: As the “I AM,” God never changes—His character, His promises, His power remain constant (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8).

  3. Presence: In declaring “I AM,” God assures Moses (and us) that He is with His people. Wherever Moses went, the God who is would go with him.

For me today, the name “I AM” is a lifeline in seasons of fear, uncertainty, or transition. When I face:

  • Fear of the Unknown: I can declare “The One who is goes before me” (Deuteronomy 31:8).

  • Feelings of Inadequacy: I rest in the promise that His strength— not mines— will carry me (2 Corinthians 12:9).

  • Loneliness: I remember “I AM with you always” (Matthew 28:20).

  • Shifting Circumstances: I anchor my soul in the unchanging God (Hebrews 6:17–18).

Application: Relying on “I AM”

  1. Speak the Name: In prayer or in struggle, simply say, “Lord, You are.” Allow that to replace fear with faith.

  2. Meditate on His Attributes: List His “I AM” statements from the Gospels (e.g., “I am the Good Shepherd,” “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life”) and personalize them to your situation.

  3. Declare His Presence: Before stepping into a challenging meeting, a difficult conversation, or a new season, say out loud, “God who is, You are here with me.”

  4. Trust His Unchangeableness: When God’s timing feels slow, remember that His character never delays; what feels like “late” to us is never late for Him.

Reflection

  1. Where do you need to be reminded today that God is present with you?

  2. Which aspect of “I AM” (self-existence, immutability, presence) most encourages you right now?

  3. How can you practically “speak” the name of the Lord into your current circumstances?

Suggested worship Song

“Great I AM” by New Life Worship

Gracious Father, thank You for revealing Yourself as “I AM.” Help me to lean into Your presence, rest in Your unchanging nature, and walk boldly each day under the assurance that You are with me. May Your name be my refuge and my song forever. In Christ’s name, Amen.
