Have You Ever Embarrassed the Devil?

Lord God,

Today I ask You to give me the kind of faith that confuses hell. Let my words, actions, and responses shame the enemy’s expectations and silence his accusations. When the world expects a breakdown, give me breakthrough. When temptation knocks, let me respond with truth. Let my walk with You cause ripples in heaven — and disruption in hell. In Jesus’ name, amen.

  • James 4:7 (NIV) – “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

  • Romans 12:21 (ESV) – “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

  • Matthew 4:10–11 (NLT) – “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’” Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.”

The question didn’t come from the pulpit or a podcast. It wasn’t scripted or planned. It came from a real moment, stirred by a real story, and it landed like thunder: "Have you ever embarrassed the devil?”

That question found life the day our missionary friend, Grace, appeared at our office door — very much to our surprise and delight. We hadn’t seen her in three years, not since she departed for an extended stay in Africa to serve in one of the continent’s most spiritually intense and physically dangerous regions.

We embraced her with long hugs and full hearts. She looked strong. Grateful. Whole.

And then, she shared her story. During her time on the field, Grace endured an unrelenting storm. She served in a region gripped by violence and deep spiritual darkness. In the midst of this, she became gravely ill. A brutal infection developed in her leg — so severe that amputation was considered. But by God’s grace, she was transported to a hospital in Nairobi, where she received top-tier care and fully recovered.

She didn’t tell the story with drama or fanfare. She shared it with grace — steady, quiet, and full of God’s presence. Then came the moment that pierced the soul.

One of her fellow missionaries, someone who had walked with her through it all, said to her: “Grace, you embarrassed the devil.”

That’s when the question rose in my spirit: Have you ever embarrassed the devil? That comment didn’t come from casual observation. It came from witnessing resilience where there should’ve been ruin, faith where fear should’ve flourished, and joy where bitterness had every right to settle in.

Grace didn’t just survive; she praised. She didn’t just recover; she returned — still serving, still testifying, still standing. There was something sacred about her response. It was defiant, but not toward God — toward despair. It was faith-filled, not in denial — but rooted in divine truth. It wasn’t just courageous — it was victorious.

And that’s what caught hell off guard.

You see, the enemy counts on tragedy to destroy you. He plans for pain to make you walk away. He hopes suffering will silence your praise and fracture your faith.

But Grace? She clung to God. She praised through pain. She made the devil’s plan look foolish.

Much like Job — a man who lost everything yet refused to lose his integrity or trust in God — Grace stood as living proof that some trials don’t break you; they reveal you.

And when they reveal Christ in you? The devil doesn’t just lose. He’s humiliated.

So, I ask again, to you and to myself: Have you ever embarrassed the devil?

Might I ask again: Have you ever embarrassed the devil?

Has your response to suffering made him regret messing with you? Have you ever forgiven someone he thought you'd hate forever? Have you ever worshiped when you should’ve wept in defeat?

Every time you choose God in the face of pressure, you shame the schemes of hell.

  1. Can you think of a moment when your reaction stunned the enemy?

  2. What area of your life right now is an opportunity to embarrass the devil?

  3. How can your faith today declare, “You lose again, Satan”?

I found these songs to inspire me in my battle to embarrass the Devil:

  • “I Told the Storm” – Greg O’Quin & Praise

  • “I Never Lost My Praise” – Tramaine Hawkins

  • “He’s Preparing Me” – Daryl Coley

  • “Victory Belongs to Jesus” – Todd Dulaney

Lord of all strength,Thank You for the witness of saints like Wendy who show us what victory looks like in real time. Help me to walk in such bold trust that my life becomes a disruption to darkness. When I’m tempted to break, let me break into praise. When I’m wounded, let me worship. And when I stand in the fire, let me shine with the kind of faith that embarrasses the devil and exalts the Savior. In Jesus’ name, amen.
