Fear and Doubt Cannot Occupy the Same Space

Updated: May 27

Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

"So do not fear, for I am with you;do not be dismayed, for I am your God.I will strengthen you and help you;I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

James 1:6–8 (NIV)

6 "But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do."

Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)

"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."

2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV)

"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."

Gracious and Sovereign God, Thank You for the stillness of Your voice that breaks through the noise of my fears. Thank You for the courage You place within me to step away from comfort and into calling. Speak now through this devotional and awaken faith in every reader. Help me to recognize when You are calling me out of the boat and into deeper waters. May I learn to silence fear and doubt and instead walk boldly with the peace and clarity that comes from You alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

In November of 2006, I found myself at a crossroad—standing in the middle of security and passion, duty and calling. For 11 years, I had served as a U.S. Postal Inspector. It was a position of respect, stability, and achievement. But as the days unfolded, I began to sense a stirring in my spirit—God was calling me into something deeper, something that had always lived quietly within me: a passion for missions.

The moment that shifted everything came during a time of prayer and reflection. I heard it clearly, not audibly, but unmistakably in my spirit: "Fear and doubt cannot occupy the same space.”

That word became a divine pivot. I realized I could not claim to trust God fully while still allowing fear and doubt to reign in my decision-making. If I was going to walk by faith, something had to give—and it wasn’t going to be the voice of God. So, I walked away from that career. Not recklessly, but faithfully. With uncertainty in hand but trust in heart, I stepped into full-time mission work.

Fear and doubt are not passive—they are spiritual strongholds that compete with faith. When God invites us to something greater, it often comes at the cost of comfort. That’s why Scripture reminds us over and over: "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.” (Isaiah 41:10) It doesn’t mean we won’t feel afraid—but we don’t have to live afraid. James writes, “The one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind... such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.” (James 1:6–8)

If we let fear and doubt settle in, faith gets pushed out. But when we lean into God’s promises, something miraculous happens—we begin to walk on what used to scare us.

Missions, like many callings, isn’t glamorous. It’s often lonely, unfamiliar, and filled with what-ifs. But it is also rich in joy, purpose, and God’s unmistakable presence. "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)

That verse became a lifeline. I didn’t see every step ahead, but I saw enough of God to know I was in the right direction.

  • What is God calling you to step into that fear is keeping you from?

  • Are there places in your life where fear and doubt are taking up space that belongs to faith?

  • What would change if you truly believed God was with you—even if everything else felt uncertain?

God doesn’t call the fearless—He calls the faithful. And His Spirit gives us the strength to move, even when trembling. “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

When you know who walks with you, fear begins to lose its voice.

Lord, I confess that fear and doubt have too often held me back from fully trusting You. Forgive me for the times I’ve allowed what I see to outweigh what You’ve spoken. Today, I choose to clear the space. Fear must go. Doubt must flee. I receive Your courage and confidence. Help me walk in obedience, trusting You for the next step even when I can’t see the whole path. Thank You for calling me, guiding me, and walking with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

No Going Back

I heard the Voice—not loud, but clear,

It spoke of purpose, pierced my fear.

A whisper strong, a holy track:

“The road ahead—no going back.”

I dropped the weight,

I loosed the chain,

Let go of titles, comfort, gain.

The badge I wore, the life I knew, I left it all to follow You.

No turning back to doubt or pride,

No hiding what I hold inside.

With Bible gripped and mission packed,

My heart declared, “No going back.”

The fields are white, the world in need,

The Spirit stirs, compels my feet.

Though storms may roar and nights go black,

Still, I will go—no going back.

So, if you ask what made me move,

It wasn't loss but love and truth.

For once you've heard the Savior’s call,

You run ahead, surrender all.

My past is marked, my path is clear,

God walks with me—I will not fear.

I'm moving on—no need to track,

My face is forward. No going back.

No Going Back

I heard the Voice—not loud, but clear,

It spoke of purpose, pierced my fear.

A whisper strong, a holy track: “The road ahead—no going back.”

I dropped the weight,

I loosed the chain,

Let go of titles, comfort, gain.

The badge I wore, the life I knew, I left it all to follow You.
