The Elevator of Life: Choosing the Right Floor

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for speaking to us through everyday moments. Help me to see Your lessons in the ordinary and hear Your voice in unexpected places. As I reflect on this message, open my heart to Your leading. Give me the courage to choose the “floors” that draw me closer to You and the wisdom to avoid those that lead me away. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This past weekend, Star and I stepped into an elevator that reached all the way to the 30th floor. But what fascinated us most wasn’t how high it could go—it was the wall of buttons in front of us. There were so many options—basements, mid-levels, high floors, and even special floors marked with an “R.”

And right there, I thought of something Dr. Tony Evans often says: “I can look at anything and draw a spiritual lesson from it.”

In many ways, life is just like that elevator. Every day, we’re faced with choices—decisions that determine whether we go higher, stay stuck, or sink lower. Some “buttons” lead us down into fear, worry, bitterness, or complacency. Others take us higher into joy, peace, obedience, and intimacy with God.

But here’s the truth: the elevator won’t move until you press a button. Your spiritual growth won’t happen by accident. You must intentionally choose to go higher.

Those special floors marked with an “R” made me think of Renewal, Repentance, or Restoration—stops God graciously offers when we need a reset. And just like certain elevator floors require a key, reaching God’s highest purposes often requires faith, obedience, and trust.

Jesus Himself is both the Operator and the Door (John 10:9). He doesn’t just give us access to the highest levels—He is the way there. But He also warns us not to settle for a “mid-level” life when He has seated us in “heavenly places” (Ephesians 2:6).

So today, ask yourself:

  • Which “button” am I pressing with my choices?

  • Am I intentionally going higher, or am I letting the wrong decisions take me down?

  • Am I ready to let God take me to new levels in my faith?

God is calling you to go higher. The question is—what floor will you choose?

Scripture for Reflection:

  • "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." – Colossians 3:2

  • "And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus." – Ephesians 2:6

  • "I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." – Philippians 3:14

Lord, I don’t want to stay on the ground floor when You’ve called me to soar. Help me to press the “buttons” of faith, obedience, and surrender so that I can experience all You have for me. When I’m tempted to settle or go backward, remind me of the heights You’ve prepared for those who love You. Take me higher in You, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
